Repairs and Restorations

At Apricot, we do all our repairs and restorations right here in our historic Troy, NY studio workshop.

At Apricot, we realize that you will have acquired jewelry treasures before you found us, and sometimes those items need professional care and attention. With countless repair operations under our belt, we have the experience and commitment to craft to properly repair or restore your jewelry.

Often, we must source particular gemstones, materials or findings for a project. We appreciate your patience while we obtain the correct items from our network of suppliers. Meantime, jewelry in for repair or restoration is securely stored here at Apricot. We know your items are your treasures. We handle them as we would our own.

Only experienced Apricot goldsmiths will be working on your jewelry here in our professional workshop. We are proud of our skill and the quality of work we can deliver to our customers. We believe it shows, and we are confident you will love the results when you pick up your newly-repaired and ready-to-wear piece of jewelry.

From a ring sizing to something more involved, we have the skill, experience and technology to properly service your jewelry.

We strongly feel that our consultation matters as much as any work we do at the bench. We want you to know what’s possible, be aware of potential complications (and how we can best avoid them), and understand why we recommend the approach we do so your jewelry will bring you many more years of wear and enjoyment.

Jewelry Repair FAQs

  • We do not change batteries or watch straps or do any other work on watches of any type. We focus our efforts where we know we shine: making and maintaining beautiful and original fine jewelry.

  • Bring it in — cleaning is always on us! While you’re here, we will look everything over. Periodic inspections are the best way to prevent bigger problems down the road.

  • As professional goldsmiths, we work in precious metals: gold and platinum, with selective work in sterling silver. As such, we don’t work with so-called alternative metals like cobalt, tungsten, titanium, stainless steel, etc., which usually require specialized facilities to manufacture and thus cannot be altered or repaired.

  • We work on repairs in the order we receive them. When you drop off your piece, we will estimate when we expect to have it completed. If you need work done in a hurry, we can move you up in line for a nominal fee.

  • Laser welding capability is a vital tool in any professional jewelry workshop, and we find it handy for many procedures. But it is not a magic wand. Skill and experience produce great results, not the tool (we have seen enough poor laser welding to know). Sometimes a job calls for the laser, sometimes the torch. We choose the tool that best suits the job at hand.

  • We don’t do any work on jewelry made from non-precious materials, gold-plated items, etc. Moreover, these types of repairs usually require lead-bearing solders, which we do not use in our workshop.

  • Anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars. Fact is, we have found that there are very few typical rings. They come in different thicknesses, widths and metals. Some have complications and risk factors, not to mention widely varying time and labor requirements. All this and more needs to be considered before we do our work. In our consultation, we will highlight any issues and share how we will approach work on your particular ring.

  • While we cannot make any promises sight-unseen, we have witnessed some amazing transformations. Let us have a look and we will see if we can help. Sometimes badly damaged jewelry can be saved; sometimes it can’t. But we are happy to help if we believe we can.
